I joined HMS Diana when she was in three bits in the bottom of a drydock in Devonport in 1967. Fresh out of training (Ganges & Mercury) and wet behind the ears. The accomodation was in the nissan huts on the foreshore, behind the field gun track in Drake barracks. Wow! what an eye opener. But I must say what a commission. I must have seen half the world in 2 years, Med, South Africa, (Beira), Far East, Oz, Windies and Various European ports. I joined her as a JRO and left to go on a Killicks course in 69. You could say I grew up on her. I heard that Diana ended up in South America (Peru?) having been refitted out in Liverpool?
I was medically discharged in 84 having had other ships and Shore establishments as a Radio Supervisor (PO). I then spent the next 21 years commuting to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. Retired early in 95.
